Boro Reviews: Vandy's Barbeque at The Small
Vandy's Barbeque has been a staple in Statesboro since 1929, today Boro Reviews takes a look. From the very top of the menu jumps out "Vandy's Famous Barbeque Sandwich". Served with a side of fries (substituted for potato salad) this item sings out it's role as the a home, white bread, slow cooked, smoke filled pile of meat between two soft buns.
The potato salad arrives looking like a bowl of mashed potatoes. It's dry and the potatoes are even a little mashed, but one taste of proves that this is the Prius of potato. A new wave hybrid of potato salad and mashed potatoes. Dry like it's mashed, but inside filled with mayonnaise, hard boiled egg, and paprika.
Moving on to the famous barbeque sandwich, it comes out not between two slices of Sunbeam white bread but on a sandwich roll. With a heap of pulled pork in the middle this sandwich is soft and collapses under the weight of the meat quickly. The pork is smokey and well textured, but most of it's flavor comes from the barbeque sauce. This mustard based barbeque sauce starts off smooth with a heavy taste of mustard and a little chile powder. It ends with a quick bite to your mouth as the spice kicks in.
From Vandy's the best item was easily the barbeque sauce, the jars up front would definitely be worth buying.
Overall: Try it.

Vandy's Bar-B-Que
Vany's Barbeque Plate - http://www.vandysbbqstatesboro.com/
Vandy's is located in the Statesboro mall. This local restaurant is known for their BBQ and I had to find out for myself what it's like. I ordered the Large Barbeque Plate (8.99). This meal came with brunswick stew, a side (I chose fries), bread, and a good portion of barbeque topped with their in house sauce.
I'm going to start off by talking about their fries. These were some of the best fries I've had in the city of Statesboro. They managed to have a crunchy exterior, without tasting overly fried. I could actually taste a good amount of potato in each fry.
The Brunswick stew was very good. I don't have a good measure as far as brunswick stews go, but this is one I would go back for. It had a bold flavor and a nice meaty texture.
Now for the main course, the BBQ itself. The meat was cooked to a perfect consistency, and had a subtle smoky flavor, which is a good thing in my book. The BBQ gets most of it's flavor from the sauce, which is quite good, it was very tangy and went well with the smoky flavors of the meat.. If your preferences lean towards the sweeter side when it comes to barbeque sauce, you may be turned off by this south carolina style sauce.
Overall: I would go again.
